I’ve looked at three apps for checking Bluetooth signals: the freeware Bluetooth Inspector from the App Store, iStumbler, which will cost you a little more than $/€/£10 from the App Store and is best known for its Wi-Fi features, and Apple’s free Bluetooth Explorer. Even if you’re a radio ham (as I am) and have all the gear to look for causes of interference, nothing beats being able to monitor the Bluetooth signal itself. When you’re happy that both ends of the hardware connection should work fine, check that the signal is good, constant, and not subject to radio interference. Once I had explained the purpose of the USB cable that came with their trackpad, they recharged it and it worked. I was once asked by a Mac user why their Magic Trackpad 2 had apparently died, only to discover that they had never recharged it at all, and its battery was simply flat. You should also check the Bluetooth device which keeps being disconnected. One good first step is to run hardware Diagnostics to confirm that it can’t detect any problem in your Mac’s hardware. While that might be true, until you’ve ruled out all other causes, or caught it red-handed, you could easily be wrong, and there could be a simple fix. It’s easy to make the assumption that such problems are caused by your Mac, or are bugs in macOS. This article suggests some tools which you may find useful when trying to identify the cause. While iStumbler is running on your Mac, any Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth device around it will be discovered almost instantly. Many users have been reporting problems with spontaneous disconnection and reconnection of Bluetooth devices, particularly mice, trackpads and keyboards. Also, you can make a wide range of tweaks to its behavior. It provides a wide range of information for each discovered network or device. The application is capable of finding all Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices and Bonjour services around your Mac. You can set it to remember discovered networks for a certain amount of time, to prevent it from using too much memory, set it to scan for networks or devices more often, to automatically select the best network and much more. Other useful options can be found in the application's Preferences panel. When viewing connected or discoverable Bluetooth devices, you may click different options, in the upper right corner of the interface, to set up new devices, manually pair with them and send files. Double clicking a Wi-Fi network will display a connection monitor. You can interact with the listed items in different ways. For example, it can show a Wi-Fi network's signal strength, encryption status, used protocol and much more. In addition, iStumbler provides you with a wide range of details for each listed element. Discovered Wi-Fi hotspots, Bluetooth devices and so on are listed on a compact user interface, in separate sections. The application scans for the aforementioned services or devices automatically, according to a user-defined time frame. The application can also discover Bluetooth devices, Bonjour services, as well as location information. This lightweight utility can discover all Wi-Fi networks around a Mac, without asking for any user intervention. If you want to know what networks can be found around you and how fast they are, iStumbler can help you. Wi-Fi networks can be found in many public places nowadays and we can connect and use them for free, with any portable device.
